The new kind of yeast is designed to produce codeine and morphine from the common sugar. An international team informed recently that home-brewing will be at new level altogether now as the yeast will enable people of produce opioids.
The opiates can be manufactured at home in near future, according to Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher Christopher Voight. He was not directly involved in the research project. Nature Chemical Biology describes the process as inefficient because it yeast.
As per the estimates, to produce only single 30-milligram dose of morphine, the producer will need around 300 liters of genetically engineered yeast. The improvement in the technology can help to make the process more efficient. The glass of yeast culture growth, the help of common sugar produced by windowsill morphine. The opioids are commonly used as pain relievers in the medical fields, but for centuries the drugs have been misused.
The addiction has ruined many lives. The molecular structure of these compounds is very complicated and it’s isolated. Traditionally these compounds are obtained from plans such as poppies or opium. The scientists could never achieve the artificial production of the same. The whole process of opioid production includes 15 step reactions. The researchers developed yeast to carry out the second part of the process. But still experiment faced difficulty in the first part of the production reaction.
The latest research has been successful with the first part too. The team included scientists from the University of California, Berkeley.
