Long-term child abuse

Recently a long research come to the end. Scientists found that people who were sexually or on some other way abused, as children, have higher chances to abuse their child! It is important that child protective agencies don’t assume, that child abuse happens only in those families. It can occur in any families, so they must pay attention!

In this study, a Psychologist Cathy Spatz Widom from City University of New York, together with his colleagues, interviewed 649 Midwestern participants, three times. They were from poor or blue collar layer. Those interviews occur in their 20s, 30s and late 40s. According from information, 358 of them were abused or neglected as children. Additionally, researchers interviewed 697 participant’s children, age 8 and older. The final act was to check child protective service records for every single participant. The given results were interesting! Roughly 21% of participants, who were abused or neglected as child, were reported to the child protective services for abusing or neglecting their child. On the other side, 12% non-abused parents, were reported for the same reason.

Abused parent’s children, reported a higher proportion of sexual abuse and neglect than non-abused parent’s children. Basically, this study found that abused parents try to repeat that behavior with their children. Non-abused parents can also abuse their children, so attention must be focused on them as well. The interesting fact is that an equal percentage of children from abused and non-abused parents reported they were physically abused during childhood. Childhood is the most important part in human life, it define us! If we, or someone else, do something wrong during that time, the consequences may be catastrophic!
