Mystery of Earth's Tectonic Plates has been solved

Scientists knew that Earth’s crust consists of several, at least 15, tectonic plates. Those plates are responsible for creating mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes. Although, scientists knew that tectonic plates are moving, exact mechanism stayed unknown! Well, now there is explanation for this mystery.

A new research has discovered that tectonic plates glide on a hidden channel, six miles thick, made of ‘’soft’’ rock. This channel is located between the upper portion of the Earth’s mantle and the base of the tectonic plates. The mantle is the layer of molten rocks, surrounding the planet’s core. According to Dr. Tim Stern, a study co-author, and a professor of environment, geography and earth science at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, the biggest mystery was what is moving these tectonic plates. Hypothesize is saying, that soft rock under the tectonic plates is creating a slippery base, which is responsible for plates drifting when they are pulled or pushed. Although scientist discovered how tectonic plates are moving, it is still unknown what is making them move. Maybe you know that because of tectonic plates moving, the Himalayas are increasing their height every year for 1cm!

There are several theories about what is causing the tectonic plates to move. Some scientists are claiming that heavier tectonic plates are sinking, and because of that they are pulling lighter plates. Other scientists are claiming that huge magma extruding makes plates push apart. At the moment, there are several scientific teams that are trying to solve this mystery. If it can be solved, scientists will be able to detect earthquakes much sooner, so the population of the affected area can be evacuated.
